Type 1: Hypoxemic respiratory failure = Lung failure

Type 2: Hypercapnic respiratory failure = Ventilatory pump failure = Respiratory pump failure

Type 1成因：氧氣濃度低、V/Q mismatch (肺動脈栓塞)、擴散受阻(如肺炎、肺水腫、ARDS)、Right to left shunt (如Transposition of great vessels, Tricuspid atresia, Tetralogy of Fallot, Total anomalous pulmonary venous return, Eisenmenger syndrome)

Type 2成因：氣道阻力過高(如COPD、氣喘、窒息)、呼吸反射停止(如腦幹中風、嚴重肥胖)、神經肌肉異常(如Guillain-Barre、運動神經元疾病)、胸廓變形(flail chest)
